The Oltalom Sports Association was founded in 2005 by the employees and veteran sportsmen of Oltalom Charity Society and John Wesley Theological College. Their goal was to provide people who are socially disadvantaged and homeless people the opportunity to do sports.

With the establishment of the Sports Association, people whose financial situation does not allow them to visit market-based sports institutions will have the opportunity to play sports. The aim of the association is to reach the widest possible number of needy with this alternative helping method, in which sport is used as a therapeutic tool to improve the mental and physical condition of disadvantaged people. The experience of success experienced through sport helps in strengthening the fighting spirit and opens the door to broadening the typically narrowed system of relationships. The success of the disadvantaged in sport can also help reduce prejudice against the poor and homeless.

The football team of the Oltalom Sports Association is the only Hungarian football team has managed to win the right to participate in the World Cup. For the first time in 2006, it successfully competed at the Homeless Football World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, where our team finished 36th out of 48 participating countries. It was 12th out of 48 teams at the 2007 World Cup in Copenhagen and 23rd out of 56 teams at the 2008 Melbourne Championships. And in 2009, it was 20th out of 48 teams at the World Cup in Milan.

The Sports Association does not only operate a football department. The boxing department also operates successfully, and it holds regular table tennis trainings at the headquarters of the Oltalom Charity Society at 9 Dankó Street. The therapeutic equestrian department is also gaining in popularity – week by week more and more disadvantaged children are visiting to have the opportunity to see the world from a donkey’s or a horse’s back.
