2021-10-15Forty years of the Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship (MET)
It is exactly 40 years since the Hungarian State, on 1 October 1981, officially recognized MET as a church. Our inception was recognized in an official statement issued on 2 October 1981:
“The President of the State Office for Church Affairs, in line with the law on free practice of religion, declared on 1 October 1981 that the Hungarian Evangelical Fellowship is a legally recognised religious denomination. The denomination seceded from the Hungarian Methodist Church. It has stated in its institutional regulations that it will abide by the laws and regulations of the state and seek to operate accordingly.”
Behind this succinct statement lay eight years of struggles, sorrows and ambitions which are detailed here.
However, the position taken by the present government is that our church status has ended. So for ten years, we have had to struggle unceasingly against this, treating it as a transitional state. We believe that God wishes us to live, and so long as our work is needed, nobody can prevent us from doing it.
We are able through our numerous educational, social and other institutions to assist some 10,000 of our fellow humans, giving them a chance to gain food, clothing, learning, and the provisions, shelter and spiritual support they deserve as people. We have a thousand employees who share in undertaking this worthy activity.
We owe gratitude and thanks to all who have contributed to us over the decades, in their prayers, decisions, material and other support, their time, their devotion and their statements.
Rejoice with us!
“I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O Lord; I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. Do not withhold your mercy from me, O Lord; may your love and your truth always protect me.” (Psalm 40, 9–12)
